Synthetic resin shingles: They may be lightweight, but that doesn’t mean they can withstand strong winds.
Synthetic resin tiles are indeed lightweight; a single person can lift them. However, this light weight presents a challenge: their wind resistance is not as strong as that of traditional cement tiles. Last year, while installing these tiles for a client in Xingtai, Hebei, we encountered a Category 7 windstorm. Two of the resin tiles on a neighbor’s roof were blown right off. Therefore, when selecting tiles, pay attention to whether reinforcement measures are required during installation. Especially in open areas, be sure to use waterproof caps, which prevent leaks and enhance wind resistance. Additionally, ensure that six nails are used per square meter.
Thicker isn't necessarily better
On the market, 2.5-millimeter and 3-millimeter thicknesses are both common, and many people assume that the 3-millimeter option is more reliable. In reality, however, increased thickness leads to increased weight, placing higher demands on the load-bearing capacity of the roof joists. The key lies in whether the installation structure is suitable, rather than simply stacking on more thickness. We recommend having a professional assess the roof’s load-bearing capacity on-site first.
Installation is quick, but don't hire unlicensed contractors
The installation of synthetic resin shingles is indeed quick; with just two people, 100 square meters can be covered in a single day. However, many homeowners, seeking to save time and effort, hastily hire a few random workers off the street and rush into the project. This often leads to misaligned tile overlaps, panels cracked from screws being overtightened, and a lack of proper drainage slope at the eaves—all resulting in a host of issues with these critical details. I recommend hiring a construction crew with proven experience in installing synthetic resin tiles—one that has completed at least ten projects. During on-site inspection, carefully check the condition of the overlaps and the placement of the screws. Otherwise, the money saved on labor will end up being spent entirely on subsequent repair costs.
