You’d never guess just how fragile resin roof tiles are
Resin roofing tiles may sound quite high-end, but in reality, they are simply plastic tiles. On the market, 90% of resin roofing tiles are made from a composite of ASA resin and PVC. While this might suggest excellent weather resistance, the reality is quite different. When exposed to intense UV radiation, the resin layer of resin roofing tiles gradually thins over time. This is especially true when they are subjected to intense sunlight in the summer and freeze-thaw cycles in the winter. After three years, the surface begins to become brittle and develop cracks.
I have encountered many customers whose resin roofing tiles began to leak as early as the fifth year after installation. The reason is quite simple: Resin inherently expands when heated and contracts when cooled. It expands in the summer and contracts in the winter, causing the nail holes to gradually widen. Combined with wind pressure, this leads to increasingly larger gaps between the tiles, which the waterproofing layer simply cannot withstand. Some claim these tiles can last 20 years, but that figure is based on laboratory data. Under real-world conditions of wind, sun, and rain, if they can last eight years without damage, that’s a miracle.
What’s even more disappointing is the corrosion resistance of resin roofing tiles. When exposed to acid rain in industrial zones or salt spray in coastal areas, the surface of resin tiles quickly loses its original luster; they turn yellow and become brittle. Some lower-quality products even start to fade and turn white after just two years. If you’re thinking of saving money and opt for resin tiles just to make things easier, you’re likely setting yourself up for trouble.
Why Do Aluminum Roof Tiles Last So Much Longer Than Resin Roof Tiles?
Aluminum roofing tiles are made from aluminum alloy sheets coated with fluorocarbon or polyester paint. This material is inherently water-resistant, fire-resistant, and UV-resistant. The natural oxide layer on the aluminum alloy provides self-protection, and when combined with the fluorocarbon coating, its weather resistance and corrosion resistance far exceed those of resin shingles.
Real-world examples show that it is perfectly normal for aluminum roofing tiles to last twenty or thirty years. I know a factory owner whose facility has had aluminum roofing installed for eighteen years. Aside from slight fading of the surface coating, the entire structure shows no signs of warping whatsoever, and the interior of the factory remains dry even on rainy days. Aluminum roofing tiles possess high strength and can withstand the impact of typhoons and hail. In contrast, resin roofing tiles are essentially disposable after a single exposure to such conditions. Even if the aluminum roofing tiles sustain localized damage, one simply needs to cut out the damaged section and replace it with a new piece. This is unlike resin roofing tiles, which are highly likely to become completely unusable once damaged.
One key point is that aluminum roofing tiles have Class A fire resistance, whereas resin roofing tiles not only melt when exposed to open flames but can even act as fuel. If resin shingles are installed on a home, there is a high probability that a cigarette butt dropped from an upstairs unit could burn a hole through them, posing a significant safety hazard. In this regard, aluminum shingles hold a clear advantage over resin shingles.
When choosing roofing materials, don’t just focus on the small price difference right now. Although resin shingles are inexpensive to install, they need to be replaced every seven or eight years. and when you add up labor costs, material costs, and waste removal fees, the total ends up being much more expensive than aluminum roofing. Aluminum roofing, on the other hand, requires only a one-time investment and provides peace of mind for thirty years. Once you crunch the numbers, you’ll know exactly which option to choose.
