Chemical resistance of resin tiles - can they be used in acid rain and industrial areas?

What about the chemical resistance of resin tiles?

In acid rain prone areas or industrial zones, acidic gases and sediments in the air can accelerate the aging and corrosion of roofing materials. ThenResin tiles are chemically resistantWhat is the performance? Can it be used near chemical plants? This article analyzes it from a materials chemistry perspective.

First, the composition of resin tile determines the corrosion resistance

Resin tiles have a surface layer of ASA and a base layer of PVC. both materials have good chemical resistance:

  • ASAASA has high resistance to inorganic acids, alkalis and salt solutions as well as a variety of organic solvents.

  • PVC: PVC is equally resistant to acid, alkali and salt and is widely used for lining chemical pipes and tanks.

Therefore, high quality resin tile itself hasExcellent chemical resistance

II. Resistance to common corrosive media

corrosive medium Resin tile resistance color steel tile note
Acid rain (pH ≈ 4-5) first-rate Poor (rusting after coating damage) Resin tiles have almost no effect
Salt spray (coastal) first-rate Resin tiles do not rust and corrode
Industrial SO₂ favorable Prolonged exposure may slightly affect gloss
alkali dust first-rate mediocre -
chloride first-rate Poor (especially stainless steel incisions) -

III. Long-term exposure experimental data

The resin tile samples were immersed in a simulated acid rain environment (sulfuric acid solution at pH=4.0) for 1000 hours:

  • No visible signs of corrosion on the surface

  • Color difference ΔE≤1.5

  • Mechanical properties (bending strength, impact strength) decreased <5%

And in the industrial area atmosphere exposure test, after 3 years of outdoor exposure, the gloss retention rate of resin tile is still >80%, far better than ordinary paint steel plate.

IV. Chemical substances requiring attention

Despite the excellent corrosion resistance of resin tiles, long-term exposure to the following substances should be avoided:

  • strong oxidizing acid(e.g. concentrated nitric acid, concentrated sulphuric acid): will slowly oxidize the surface layer.

  • Aromatic solvents(e.g. toluene, xylene): May dissolve PVC.

  • High temperature solution of strong alkali(e.g. concentrated alkali above 80°C): degrades PVC.

These conditions are rarely encountered in everyday use environments (acid rain, industrial exhaust fumes, coastal salt spray), so there is no need to be overly concerned.

V. Recommendations for use in industrial zones

For building roofs around chemical plants, electroplating plants, smelters:

  1. optionASA layer thickness ≥0.1mmof resin tiles to increase the corrosion resistance margin.

  2. Periodically (every 2-3 years) wash the roof to remove deposits of corrosive dust.

  3. Avoid usingMetal fittingsDirect contact with shingles (to prevent galvanic corrosion) should be isolated by plastic or rubber gaskets.

VI. Comparison with color steel tile

The anti-corrosion of color steel tile depends on the surface coating (polyester, PVDF, etc.). Once the coating is scratched or aging, the substrate steel plate will rust rapidly under the action of acid rain and chlorine ions, and it will perforate and fail in a few years. Resin tiles, on the other hand, do not have the concept of “coating off” - its corrosion resistance is inherent in the material itself and will not fail due to scratches.

VII. Summary

Resin tiles have excellent chemical resistance. It can be used in acid rain areas, coastal salt spray environments and general industrial areas. Its corrosion resistance is far better than that of color steel tiles and comparable with PVC pipes. When choosing and selecting, pay attention to the thickness of ASA layer, you can get long-term stable corrosion protection.
