Why Does the ASA Layer Determine the Service Life of Resin Roof Tiles?

What exactly is the ASA layer on the surface of resin roof tiles? Why does it determine the tiles’ service life?

When shopping for resin roofing tiles, many people often hear sellers mention the ”ASA top layer,” but few truly understand why this thin layer of material directly determines the service life of the entire tile. It’s safe to say that without a qualified ASA co-extruded layer, the weather resistance and fade resistance of resin roofing tiles would be significantly compromised.

ASA is a highly weather-resistant engineering plastic; its full name is acrylonitrile -styrene-acrylate copolymer. Its molecular structure contains no unsaturated double bonds that are susceptible to UV degradation, making it resistant to aging, chalking, and discoloration even after prolonged exposure to sunlight, wind, and rain. According to commonly used industry test data, even after 5,000 hours of accelerated aging testing, color changes in high-quality ASA materials remain within a very narrow range.

Many low-priced, poor-quality resin roof tiles on the market either cut corners by making the ASA layer extremely thin—less than 0.05 mm—or simply replace the ASA with ordinary ABS material or even recycled material. Once installed, these tiles will show noticeable fading and cracking on the surface within two or three years, and within five or six years, they will begin to crumble extensively, shattering at the slightest touch.

High-quality, standard resin roof tiles generally use a four-layer co-extrusion process, with an ASA top layer that is at least 0.12 mm thick. This layer is firmly bonded to the underlying PVC substrate, preventing delamination or peeling. When exposed to the outdoors over the long term, the color change (ΔE) after ten years can be kept within 5; fading is virtually imperceptible to the naked eye, and the product’s anti-aging lifespan can reach two to three decades.

Therefore, when making a purchase, consumers should not focus solely on the overall thickness of the shingles; they should pay closer attention to the thickness and material of the ASA surface layer, as this thin layer is the true ”weather-resistant protective layer” of resin shingles.
