What is the weight of resin tiles? The science behind lightweight and high strength

Many people mistakenly believe that the heavier the building material, the stronger it is, but theResin tile weightIt is light, but not fragile. A. How light is resin tile?

The density of high-quality synthetic resin tiles is about 0.5-0.6 g/cm³, weighing about 6 kg per square meter. Compare this to traditional tiles:

  • Clay tile: about 30-50 kg/m2
  • Glazed tile: 30-50kg/m2
  • Cement tiles: 20-30 kg/m2
  • Color steel tile: light but poor heat insulation, easy to rust and corrosion

The weight of resin tiles is only one-fifth to one-tenth of glazed tiles, which greatly reduces the weight of the roof.

II. Where does lightness come from?

The fundamental reason lies in the material properties. The main component of resin tile is synthetic resin, which is much less dense than clay, porcelain or metal. At the same time, by adding glass fiber and other reinforcing materials and reasonable structural design, the mechanical properties are guaranteed while reducing the weight. The tensile strength of synthetic resin tile is not less than 38MPa, and the bending modulus is not less than 2000MPa, which fully meets the requirements of roofing.

Third, the impact resistance performance of the actual test

Lightweight does not mean fragile. Tested according to standards:

  • A 1 kg steel ball was dropped freely from a height of 3 meters without cracks in the tiles.
  • Under the condition of support spacing of 660mm, loaded with 150kg load, the tiles have no cracks and no damage.

This means that resin tiles are able to withstand accidental impacts such as hailstones and construction stampedes.

IV. The real value of lightness

  1. Reduced building loads: New buildings can reduce the cross-section of beams and columns, saving steel and concrete; old buildings with flat slopes can be installed directly without reinforcement.
  2. Reduced transportation and construction costs: Light weight, easy loading and unloading, lower freight cost; large single sheet area (effective width 800-1050mm), high paving efficiency, saving labor.

V. Harmonization of strength and lightness

An important indicator of material efficiency isspecific strength(Strength/Density). By optimizing the molecular structure and adding reinforcing fibers, resin tiles achieve the unity of low density and high strength. Moreover, lightweight does not mean unstable - as long as the lap specification (horizontal lap at least one crest, longitudinal lap 15-20cm), with self-tapping screws plus waterproof washers fixed, fully meet the requirements of wind uncovering.

VI. Summary

The “good body” of resin tile is not a reduction, but the result of material science. Light, in order to make the roof safer, more convenient construction; strong, in order to withstand the test of wind, rain and hail. Do not worry about “too light and not strong” when choosing, as long as the product meets the national standard, lightweight and high strength is its core advantage.
